"Children are not soul-less, unguided creatures made for adults to manipulate like chattel. They are spirited beings, complete at every given moment and age. They have differentiated minds, specialized abilities and unique gifts that give testimony to themselves and their Creator. Children look to us for guidance. And they see us as symbols of love and hate, truth and deceit, selflessness and selfishness, and good and evil.....Children are not our subordinates. They are our co-conspirators - breathing the same pneuma as us and contributing to a world far beyond present comprehension. Ultimately, in our webs of relationships, it is the children who will write, rewrite, and edit our scripts of life." ~Anthony Gregorc

Did you know...?

On December 17, 1790, a massive stone carving, 12 feet across, 3 feet thick and weighing in at just under 25 TONS, was discovered in the Zocalo of Mexico City.  This stone, called Cuauhxicalli, later came to be known as the Aztec Calendar, or Sun Stone.  It had been carved during the reign of the 6th Aztec monarch in 1479 and dedicated to the Sun.  It carries both astronomical and mythological significance, and is today the basis of much of our 2012 panic.

2009 peaked with interest in the "end times" prophecies now running amok with the coming of 2012.  As the end of the Mayan calendar nears, what do *you* think will happen?

There are some wonderful explanations in these books, all of which give very detailed accounts of the Mayan calendar system, how it was created and why, as well as what the inscribed information intended to relay, what to watch for and what is simply speculation designed to put the public into a panic...

"2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl" by Daniel Pinchbeck

"Beyond 2012: Catastrophe or Awakening?" by Geoff Stray

"Fractal Time: The Secret of 2012 and a New World Age" by Gregg Braden

for an exciting Atlantean shift on the topic...

"Time Storm 2012: Atlantis and the Mayan Prophecy" by Julianne Farnsworth

or for a little lighter reading...

"The Complete Idiot's Guide to 2012" by Dr. Synthia Andrews

Read and study the prophecies to your heart's and mind's content.  Inform yourself.  But whatever you do, don't panic.  2012 is *not* going to be the end of the world, or humanity, or civilization.  Honestly, if we'd never have discovered the relics, the last day entered would have just come and gone like any other, and we would have been none the wiser.  One could always have a sense of humour about the calendar and just assume "Heck, with something THAT large, it doesn't mean the world is ending, they just got tired of carving that darn thing!"

What a Wicked Winter!

But there's no reason just spend it *just* indoors!  Even sunny Florida has seen its share of snow and ice this winter!  So rather than hide from Mother Nature's cold shoulder, let's find some little ways that we can celebrate the wicked winter weather we're having!

Family time should be just as important part of your schedule as any other, and kids especially need attention and guidance at home.  Here are a couple fun ways parents can show them some one-on-one attention this winter.

Be a good example in caring for others by crafting bird feeders.  Winter's Feathered Friends are out in droves seeking any morsel of food they can find in the frozen parts of the land.  Your child can make a bird or six happy by taking a walk in nearby woods or parks to find pine cones.  Gather a few and tap them out to make sure there is no loose dirt or anything else unpleasant in it, and spread the pinecone generously with peanut butter.  After you've done that, pour a good amount of wild birdseed (blends available for your area at most major stores) into a medium-sized bowl and dip and roll the pinecone around until it is nice and full with seeds.  Then, just loop some string round the stem of the pinecone, and tie it to overhanging branches around the yard.  Once passing birds find them, your yard will be alive with colour as the birds return to feed and bring their friends!

Bring a little magick into your child's life with a wand craft that also involves a long walk in nature.  While strolling the woods, the park, even the beach, have your child keep their eyes on the ground for the "perfect" stick.  This should be one about the length of their forearm, and they will know it when they find that special one.  While you're out, also keep an eye out for any special stones, flowers, vines, anything you might be able to use to decorate the wand.  At home, clean the things you've found and use a hot glue gun to decorate the stick with your treasures.  You can also use scraps of ribbons, tiny crystals, sequins, all kinds of things you can find around the house.  Let your child know their wand is special because it is their energy that went into making it.  You may also want to do a small consecration ritual to really make it theirs.

If you've visited the Spiral before, you may want to refresh your browser to be sure you're seeing all the new changes.  Just hit the "Refresh" button or F5 to do this.

We've changed to a different chat room as well, now using the Meebo site to host the Fireside.  This is much easier to use than the previous room.

Letting our children participate in even the simplest seasonal rituals can be a wonderful learning experience for them (and us!), embedding within them the respect for and wonder of Nature and the way she works.

Of Interest to our Astral Travelers...

Also in the sidebar, you will now see links to an Astral Journal, Parts 1-4.  Start at the beginning, if you will, and walk with Jyl through the years of her astral travels, the guides and kindred she has re-met and who have become a vital part of her everyday life.

There are lessons to be taken from these writings.  This is the only place you will find such a complete picture of Jyl's experiences and it could well be worth your read.  While many things may seem unreal or even the product of sheer fantasy, just remember - there is much more to this world than what we see and know here in the physical.

These experiences are real.

These people are real...
their emotions...
their feelings...
their touch...
their words...

These magicks are real.

Everyone has these abilities...
All it takes to begin is a simple shift in focus.

Oppressed Pagans?

Sadly, the Burning Times are not yet over, they're simply more silent and hidden behind the red tape of a society that claims equality and freedom yet acts in quite another manner.  As Pagan Parents ourselves, we can vouch that no Pagan is safe from the harsh realities of the accusations and discriminations of others who do not (or will not) understand that our Path is a peaceful one.  We do not sacrifice small animals, we do not brainwash young children, nor do we send messengers door-to-door looking for recruits and forcing our beliefs on others.  Still, we live with the harassment and false accusations which our ancestors gave their lives to prove wrong.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, be it in divorce court, on the job or anywhere, then please make yourself familiar with this article which may be able to offer some solutions to the discriminations you face.
