On December 17, 1790, a massive stone carving, 12 feet across, 3 feet thick and weighing in at just under 25 TONS, was discovered in the Zocalo of Mexico City. This stone, called Cuauhxicalli, later came to be known as the Aztec Calendar, or Sun Stone. It had been carved during the reign of the 6th Aztec monarch in 1479 and dedicated to the Sun. It carries both astronomical and mythological significance, and is today the basis of much of our 2012 panic.
What a Wicked Winter!
But there's no reason just spend it *just* indoors! Even sunny Florida has seen its share of snow and ice this winter! So rather than hide from Mother Nature's cold shoulder, let's find some little ways that we can celebrate the wicked winter weather we're having!
Family time should be just as important part of your schedule as any other, and kids especially need attention and guidance at home. Here are a couple fun ways parents can show them some one-on-one attention this winter.
Be a good example in caring for others by crafting bird feeders. Winter's Feathered Friends are out in droves seeking any morsel of food they can find in the frozen parts of the land. Your child can make a bird or six happy by taking a walk in nearby woods or parks to find pine cones. Gather a few and tap them out to make sure there is no loose dirt or anything else unpleasant in it, and spread the pinecone generously with peanut butter. After you've done that, pour a good amount of wild birdseed (blends available for your area at most major stores) into a medium-sized bowl and dip and roll the pinecone around until it is nice and full with seeds. Then, just loop some string round the stem of the pinecone, and tie it to overhanging branches around the yard. Once passing birds find them, your yard will be alive with colour as the birds return to feed and bring their friends!
Bring a little magick into your child's life with a wand craft that also involves a long walk in nature. While strolling the woods, the park, even the beach, have your child keep their eyes on the ground for the "perfect" stick. This should be one about the length of their forearm, and they will know it when they find that special one. While you're out, also keep an eye out for any special stones, flowers, vines, anything you might be able to use to decorate the wand. At home, clean the things you've found and use a hot glue gun to decorate the stick with your treasures. You can also use scraps of ribbons, tiny crystals, sequins, all kinds of things you can find around the house. Let your child know their wand is special because it is their energy that went into making it. You may also want to do a small consecration ritual to really make it theirs.

We've changed to a different chat room as well, now using the Meebo site to host the Fireside. This is much easier to use than the previous room.

Oppressed Pagans?
Sadly, the Burning Times are not yet over, they're simply more silent and hidden behind the red tape of a society that claims equality and freedom yet acts in quite another manner. As Pagan Parents ourselves, we can vouch that no Pagan is safe from the harsh realities of the accusations and discriminations of others who do not (or will not) understand that our Path is a peaceful one. We do not sacrifice small animals, we do not brainwash young children, nor do we send messengers door-to-door looking for recruits and forcing our beliefs on others. Still, we live with the harassment and false accusations which our ancestors gave their lives to prove wrong.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, be it in divorce court, on the job or anywhere, then please make yourself familiar with this article which may be able to offer some solutions to the discriminations you face.
